How Google got hurt by botnets?

Earlier today, a blog article was posted on ZDNet talking about “Google exec calls for ISPs to get tough on botnets”. It says that head of Google’s Anti-Malvertising team Eric Davis wants ISPs to look beyond profits and take a more proactive approach to dealing with malware-infested computers on their networks.

Without money incentive, ISPs usually have no interest to do this. It takes time and needs money to detect and block bot machine within ISPs network. However, since Google got hurt by botnets too much, Google cannot wait for a minute to take action.

Google ‘s revenue mainly comes from advertising. The big problem Google facing is fraudulent clicks generated from botnets. Traffic generated from botnets are diverse, and random. It is so hard for Google to detect and block these forged traffic. It hurts advertiser and Google’s interest a lot.

Till now, there is no trusted technology to prevent botnets.

Oracle Acquires SUN

Today’s breaking new tech news is Oracle will acquire for $9.50 a share in cash, or about $5.6 billion excluding debt, in a deal that plunges Larry Ellison & Co. into the hardware market. Now Oracle owns Java, “the most important software Oracle has ever acquired” per Oracle’s comments.

Secret Microsoft Word Test String

In Microsoft Word, if you type =rand(100, 99) then enter, you will see a very long paragraph of sentences of “The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.” being generated. What is this for? This is the secret test string used for testing new installed font and other attributes.

The secret is like this:

=rand(numberOfLine, numberOfSentence)

In Office 2007, the sentence being generated is different. The string used is the same. You can try by yourself.

Legitimate Advertising-Supported Software Ensured by Third Party

Advertising-supported software, if done properly, is an unique and viable business model in which software developers can make money without requiring the end-user to pay for the software. However, the key words are if done properly, which sometimes is not the case. Admob cut down banner ad bid price

Admob announced that it was cutting its minimum ad bid prices on March 2nd 2009. It claims the price cust is for stimulating the market and encouraging advertisers onto mobile. This follows price cuts on operator portal inventory, which has seen CPM rates in the UK almost halved from this time last year.

This is a good time for advertisers to try Admob to promote their product and services. However this is a bad news for iPhone app developer who is using Admob or planning to use Admob to do advertising.
